Why I Switched From MailChimp to ConvertKit
You’ve heard how important your email list is for your business.
You've read blog post after blog post trying to learn the right strategies.
You've added content upgrades to blog posts and opt-ins in the "right" places on your website.
You're putting energy and time into growing your list.
But if you're not on the right email platform, you may not even be able to take advantage of all your subscribers.
That’s why earlier this year, I switched from MailChimp to ConvertKit.
I started using MailChimp in 2013 and still believe it is a great platform to get started on. You can have up to 2000 subscribers on a free account and they have reasonably priced packages. Plus, designing your emails couldn’t be simpler.
But when I started taking my list-building seriously, MailChimp wasn’t fitting my needs.
Offering a variety of free downloads on your blog should be easy. But with MailChimp, it wasn't. The platform isn't built for that. The only way I could do it was through hidden merge fields and a third-party tool, LeadPages.
Sound confusing? Tell me about it.
It was doable, but it wasn't easy to see what downloads interested my readers. Plus, it meant I spent hundreds of dollars on another system.
I realized that MailChimp was not a long-term solution. I needed a smarter system that would save me time, improve my email marketing, and scale as my business grew. I wanted a system I didn't have to "hack" to make it work for me.
That’s where ConvertKit came in.
If I had to summarize ConvertKit in one word, it would be “smart.” I love working with a system that does exactly what I need it to do, without all the fuss and hacking.
Nathan Barry, the founder of ConvertKit, experienced similar growing pains in his business. He felt that the email platforms he had to choose from were preventing him from being strategic with his email list. When he couldn't find the system he wanted, he decided to create it himself!
ConvertKit was created for business owners like you and me. People who want to know what their audience likes, send targeted emails, offer free downloads, and email courses too!
Are you feeling like your email system may be hurting you in the long run? Want to have an email platform that can help your business grow? ConvertKit may be the right system for you!
Want to switch to ConvertKit but not sure where to start?
I've got a step-by-step checklist so you can migrate your subscribers and content quickly and easily!
Here are 5 of the reasons I switched from MailChimp to ConvertKit:
1. I wanted a “subscriber-based” email service provider.
Email platforms are either "subscriber-based" or "list-based."
A "list-based" email system focuses on the lists you have and not unique subscribers. MailChimp is a list-based system. That means if you have your main list and a webinar registration list, and you have the same person on both lists, you are paying for that person twice.
If you're growing a business with webinars, free downloads, products, and more, you can imagine how big of a problem this can be. I was tired of paying for the same subscriber multiple times, just because they were on more than one list.
ConvertKit, however, is a subscriber-based system. That means I just have one "database" of subscribers. Each subscriber can have multiple Forms, Sequences, Tags, or Segments attached to their profile. No more penalization for having loyal subscribers!
Plus, I love the profile of each subscriber!
2. Content upgrades are easy to set up.
As I mentioned earlier, I love offering content upgrades and free downloads. And ConvertKit was built with this list-building strategy in mind. It is so easy to create a new Form and add a file download to the confirmation email.
Instead of wasting my time hacking MailChimp, I can quickly create free download opportunities for my audience.
3. Tags and Segments help me understand my audience and be more strategic.
Tags and Segments are powerful ways to learn more about your readers. You can use Tags to track students, leads, interests, and more!
ConvertKit allows you to include and exclude any Forms, Segments, Courses, or Tags when sending out a Broadcast. This is so valuable when it comes to sending out strategic emails to your list. You are in total control of who gets what emails you send out and how you want your subscriber experience to be.
4. Sequences are fast and easy to create.
If you’ve ever created a free email course or an automated funnel, you know that it can be time-consuming. ConvertKit makes it so easy and simple.
I recently recreated a 9-email course for a client in ConvertKit and it only took me an hour. My client was amazed! She said it took her over a week to build that out in MailChimp when she first created it. A week! Talk about a time saver!
You can even drag and drop emails to reorder them and it will automatically adjust the dates. See what I mean about ConvertKit being a smart system?
5. Automation rules.
Automation rules are the heart of why ConvertKit is so powerful. You can set up an endless variety of "Rules" that will help your email list run like a well-oiled machine - without any ongoing work from you!
For example, when someone signs up for a free download that is related to one of your products, they can get tagged as a "lead" for that product. And when they buy the product, their "lead" tag can get removed automatically!
The options are endless!
ConvertKit's advanced features can help you take your list-building strategies to the next level.
If someone has already subscribed to one of your Forms, you can replace the Form with a new promotion instead! Maybe for a related product?
ConvertKit’s analytics show you detailed analytics on Broadcasts, Sequences, and Forms so you can see what is (or isn't!) working.
If someone didn’t open a Broadcast you sent, you can re-send it to those people by clicking one button. This is a brilliant tool for increasing how many people see your emails and ensuring important emails get read.
ConvertKit can do landing pages. Yup, you heard that right! If you’re looking for a way to do landing pages without investing in another system like LeadPages, then ConvertKit is perfect for you.
You can have ConvertKit Forms pop-up or slide-in. There are a ton of options on how and when you want them to appear!
The ConvertKit team is constantly adding new features and integrations to ConvertKit. I love using a system where the support team listens to the requests of its users and is 100% devoted to making this system the best it can be.
So let me ask you: Are you happy with your email service provider?
There are many amazing platforms to choose from and no one platform is right for everyone! Do your research, test, experiment, and see what is best for you, your business, and your audience.
I recommend ConvertKit to anyone who is ready to take their email list seriously and doesn’t want to have to worry about outgrowing a system anytime soon.
